Before the Palooka 5 Metropolis tour hit the road, Sonic Sound was brought in to provide a technical rehearsal at the Creative Innovation Centre (CICCIC) in Taunton. This session was essential for refining the live soundtrack workflow for a silent film performance, where sound, timing, and reliability are absolutely critical.
For this rehearsal, I supplied a complete standard sound hire package, covering all core audio requirements for the band and film screening. This included a digital sound desk, a full set of instrument microphones, wireless microphones, wireless in‑ear monitoring (IEMs), stage boxes, DI boxes, microphone stands, and all necessary XLR and mains cabling.
Because Palooka 5 perform a tightly‑synchronised live score to Metropolis, particular attention was paid to monitoring stability. The band rely heavily on wireless IEMs, so fresh batteries were installed across all radio systems to ensure uninterrupted performance throughout the rehearsal.
I handled the session as sound engineer, working closely with the band to balance levels, refine monitor mixes, and identify any potential issues ahead of the live shows. This included managing dynamics for quiet cinematic passages and ensuring sufficient headroom for the heavier surf‑rock sections.
This technical rehearsal allowed us to lock in a reliable audio setup, giving both the band and venues confidence going into the tour.
