Metropolis – Powering Up a Film Festival with Live Sci-Fi Surf Tunes

We’re thrilled to announce Sonic Sound’s latest adventure at the intersection of cinema and live music! As the sound providers for an innovative film festival, we’re bringing a unique auditory experience to fans across various venues. Our collaboration with the spectacular Palooka 5 has been nothing short of electric, as they gear up to perform a live score to a silent movie, enchanting audiences with their unique blend of 1960s-inspired ‘sci-fi surf music’.

Palooka 5 is a surf garage band based in Somerset, England. They have a unique sound that blends 1960s surf music with elements of sci-fi and a modern twist, reminiscent of bands like the B52s and influenced by the work of Joe Meek. The band is known for their energetic live performances and their use of vintage musical instruments, which adds an authentic touch to their music.

Their music has been well-received, with airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music and positive reviews in several music magazines. Palooka 5 has released several records, including their latest EP ‘Radio Telescopes’, and their albums often feature a mix of studio and live recordings, showcasing their dynamic performance style.

This weekend, we kicked things off with a rehearsal that went extremely well. It was also our first chance to deploy our new Sennheiser Wireless In-Ear Monitor (IEM) packs, and the feedback from Palooka 5 was overwhelmingly positive. These body packs not only deliver impeccable sound quality but also offer the musicians the freedom to move and perform without restraint, enhancing their interaction with the audience and the films.

It was great to be back at The Wellington Arts Association – a place where I have many fond memories. Returning in a different capacity was a rewarding experience, and it was lovely to work in a venue that I know so well.
